Manual Muscle Testing & Applied Kinesiology
Manual muscle testing and applied kinesiology are diagnostic tools that can aid in chiropractic practice and in assessing and diagnosing musculoskeletal conditions.
Manual muscle testing involves evaluating the strength and integrity of individual muscles by applying resistance while a patient performs specific movements or holds certain positions. This testing allows chiropractors to identify muscle imbalances or weaknesses that may contribute to pain, limited mobility, or dysfunction.
Applied kinesiology, expands upon manual muscle testing by incorporating other diagnostic methods such as assessing reflexes and postural analysis. By combining these various techniques, chiropractors may gain more understanding of the underlying causes of a patient's musculoskeletal issues.
Diversified Chiropractic Technique
In diversified chiropractic technique is the most common technique used by chiropractors and most extensively taught at the chiropractic degrees. In this technique chiropractor applies manual adjustments primarily to the spine but can also address other areas of the body. The goal is to restore normal joint function, alleviate pain, and improve overall health.
Chiropractors using this technique employ high-velocity, low-amplitude thrusts, often accompanied by audible joint cracking sounds known as cavitation. This technique involves a thorough evaluation of the patient's condition, including a comprehensive assessment of the spine's alignment and motion. The chiropractor then uses a combination of techniques to target areas of dysfunction, such as manual adjustments, stretching, soft tissue manipulation, and physical therapy modalities.
Gonstead Chiropractic Technique
The Gonstead technique is a chiropractic method that was developed by Clarence Gonstead in 1923. This technique focuses on hands-on adjustment and is claimed to expand "standard diversified technique" by removing rotation from the adjusting thrust.
Chiropractic Toggle Recoil Technique
The Toggle adjustment is a gentle low force technique that can be performed on a patient without having to turn the neck or apply the type of force that results in a “clicking or cracking” noise. This technique is very beneficial for patients who prefer to avoid the high velocity manipulation but still require the benefit of spinal adjustment. There is no twisting or cracking of the neck, only a firm pressure on the joint as the ‘drop piece’ of the table gently releases.
Thompson Drop Chiropractic Technique
The Thompson drop chiropractic technique is a specific chiropractic adjustment method that utilises a drop table. The drop table has segmented sections that can be moved up and down to apply gentle force to areas of the spine that need adjustment.
This technique was developed by Dr. J. Clay Thompson and is commonly used by chiropractors to treat various musculoskeletal conditions. The idea behind the Thompson drop technique is to use gravity as an aid in the adjustment process, allowing for a more precise and comfortable adjustment for the patient.
During a Thompson drop adjustment, the chiropractor will typically have the patient lie face down on the drop table. The chiropractor will then apply a quick thrust to the specific area of the spine that needs adjustment. As the thrust is applied, the section of the table underneath that area will drop slightly, providing additional force and enhancing the effectiveness of the adjustment.
